Nicole Duggan

Dr. Duggan is a clinical instructor at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School where she serves as the both the Division Director and Research Director of Emergency Ultrasound in the Department of Emergency Medicine.

Her research passion complements her clinical work by centering on the intersect of improving access to healthcare delivery, advanced imaging technologies, and innovation.

She harnesses her background in medical device research to develop and integrate innovative ultrasound-based technologies into clinical care.

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is a cost-effective, portable, low-risk tool which offers
actionable, real-time medical imaging data. It has the potential to transform clinical medicine, however as a user-dependent tool, limitations in POCUS training scalability hamper widespread dissemination.

Her research addresses this problem in two ways; through developing machine learning algorithms for automated POCUS applications deployable in any clinical setting, and using simulation-based approaches to establish scalable POCUS training and education.

Her work has earned national recognition in the form of awards and grant funding, and she is considered an emerging national expert in the field of developing machine learning tools for emergency POCUS applications.
