Workshop 1/5 – Dec. 5th 2025
Course delivered in English
In this hands-on you will learn how to assess splanchnic perfusion by evaluating the kidneys, the liver and the spleen.
These indices are potentially applicable whenever cardiovascular homeostasis is jeopardized (such as in trauma, sepsis, cardiogenic shock) and in different clinical contexts (from prehospital and emergency department, to anesthesia and intensive care), due to the portability and nowadays increasingly ubiquitous availability of point-of-care-ultrasound.
Similar to brain ultrasound, ultrasound-based splanchnic perfusion assessment can indeed be easily integrated into the whole-body-approach to complex scenarios such as trauma and allow simultaneously the evaluation of global and regional blood flow.

Workshop 2/5 – Dec. 5th 2025
Course delivered in English
In this hands-on we illustrate how head-to-toe US can be advantageously used during CPR and immediately after return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC).
You will learn ultrasound to confirm cardiac arrest and guide management during cardiopulmonary
Resuscitation, general assessment immediately after ROSC, assessment of hemodynamics and circulatory support, non‐cardiac ultrasound including the placement of venous/arterial lines and larger bore cannulas for extracorporeal life support (ECLS).
We aim to provide a practical approach and mainly focus on the use of transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) although transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) may have its advantages and uses in this context. Whilst various protocols have been described, their core principles are identical and none has been demonstrated as superior to others.

Workshop 3/5 – Dec. 5th 2025
Course delivered in English
In this hands-on we illustrate a rapid protocol to detect pericardial, intrathoracic, and intra abdominal effusions.
You will learn e-FAST applications, the primary assessment allowing an “A, B, C, D, E” ATLS
resuscitation sequence, monitoring the adequacy of resuscitation by POCUS.
Detection of free fluid should prompt immediate further diagnostic procedures and/or interventions. Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma examination to identify pathological presence of free fluid/blood (i.e., pericardial sac, pleural space, and peritoneum) in traumatic acute abdomen should be considered as a basic skill.
Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma examination should be considered as an integral component of trauma resuscitation.

Workshop 4/5 – Dec. 5th 2025
Course delivered in English
In this hands-on we will illustrate an approach to the assessment of respiratory failure that includes both the lung and the major respiratory muscles. You will learn to measure diaphragmatic excursion, fractional shortening of the diaphragm and major inspiratory and expiratory accessory muscles, and a protocol for the approach to the assessment of the lung parenchyma.
The purpose of this section is to provide a comprehensive assessment of the respiratory system in order to individualize treatment and to conscientiously choose between different non-invasive and invasive support systems.

Workshop 5/5 – Dec. 5th 2025
Course delivered in English
In this hands-on we illustrate the use of brain US to have a panoramic overview of the brain parenchyma and its vessels. You will learn to monitor cerebral blood flow (CBF), evaluate non-invasive intracranial pressure (nICP), estimate midline shift, assess ventricles’ enlargement, and the eventual presence of masses or blood within the brain parenchyma.
The introduction of brain ultrasonography (US), offers as a proxy for neuromonitoring in critically ill patients with several advantages such as wide availability, possibility to assess multiple organs
with the same instrument, and rapid responses at the bedside (point of care ultrasound,POCUS).
