About this course

Trans-esophageal Echocardiography guided Resuscitation

Workshop

Description

The utility of bedside transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) in the diagnosis and management of critically ill patients in emergency department ( ED) and Intensive Care Unit ( ICU) has been well studied.

In 2010 the American College of Emergency Physicians and the American Society of Echocardiography published a joint consensus statement acknowledging focused bedside TTE as a fundamental tool in the evaluation and management of emergency department patients.

However, due to several technical limitationc, acquisition of images may be inadequate in up to 50% of critically ill patients. Regardless of externally limiting factors, transesophageal echocardiography (TTE) reliably obtains high-quality images and can provide continuous feedback of the quality of CPR during resuscitation.

Over the past years TEE has been increasingly recognized as a unique tool to enhance echocardiographic examination and improve decisión making in critical ill patients, in the ICU and Emergency Department settings.

An increasing level of evidence has been published in recent years demostrating the feasibility to train emergency physicians and intensivits for the use of focused TEE at the point-of-care. However, we have recognized that an important barrier to adoption of this new applications is the lack of Access to hands-on training ( i.e. patients or high fidelity simulators )

Through the organization of this workshop we hope to provide emergency physicians and intensivists, with a unique opportunity to gain basic training in this emerging modality.
