The USCMC (UltraSound Critical Management Certification) Credentialing Pathways

After reading USCME & USCMC sections and the USLS, ECHO ICU, PRIMUS pages, find below a matrix template to develop your certification program, from 'Novice' to 'Expert' Level 1 Competency. Several USCMC learning modules are designed over 3 levels of practice and competency, as per WFUMB/EFSUMB recommendations, for any relevant area.

Each module is made-up of 2 learning phases (Part I and II) and a final certification exam (Part III).

Students accomplishing successfully the overall certification pathway, may apply for Winfocus International competence certification. It is also possible to participate solely to the theoretical and practical course (Part I), which allows to pursue the attendance certificate and training points as stated by the Continuous Medical Education programme of each single country.

PART I

Self learning pre-course (4-8 h)

USLS STANDARD CERTIFICATION PATHWAY (multi-modular, multi-competence)

1) USLS BL1 Provider - Certification
'Ultrasound Life Support' Module, Basic Management, Level 1, Provider

Technical & Clinical Learning Goals:

Basic multi-focused ultrasound skills for Primary 'ABCDE' Management (Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability);
Basic focused ultrasound skills for Secondary 'Head-To-Toes' Management (Head, Thorax, Abdomen, Limbs);

Attendance Prerequisites:

Any credentialed health care professional dealing with EM, CCM, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, EMS/HEMS, etc.;

Credentialing Steps:

Entry-course:

e-Learning (optional);
2 days, basic/primary management, ABCDE/HTT skills, theory + hands-on (click here for the BL1 & AL1 templates);

Proctored practice:

3-6 months, ABCDE/HTT skills, direct (1/3) and indirect supervision, 200 exams, log-book records;

Certification exam:

1/2-1 day, technical/clinical/organizational skills, questionnaire, video-clips interpretation, practice on models/patients/simulators, 2y validity.

2) USLS BL1 Trainer - Certification

'Ultrasound Life Support' Module, Basic Management, Level 1, Trainer

Technical & Clinical Learning Goals:

Basic multi-focused ultrasound skills for Primary 'ABCDE' Management (Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability);
Basic focused ultrasound skills for Secondary 'Head-To-Toes' Management (Head, Thorax, Abdomen, Limbs = HTT);
Basic Communication & Training Skills;

Attendance Prerequisites:

BL1 Provider Certification (alternative previous certified experience will be acknowledged as a partially or totally equivalent pre-requisite).

Credentialing Steps:

Entry-course:

e-Learning (optional);
1 day, theory + hands-on + role-play, basic ABCDE/HTT, educational concepts and methods, role-play;

Proctored practice:

1-3 months, training and ABCDE/HTT clinical skills, backing 1-3 courses, log-book records;

Certification exam:

1 day, technical/clinical/organizational/educational skills, questionnaire, presentation trial, 2y validity.

3) USLS AL1 Provider - Certification
'Ultrasound Life Support' Module, Advanced Management, Level 1, Provider

Technical & Clinical Learning Goals:

Advanced multi-focused ultrasound skills for Primary 'ABCDE' Management (Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability);

4) USLS AL1 Trainer - Certification

OTHER CERTIFICATION PATHWAYS (modular, mono-competence)

a) Level 1 'ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY'

You can access in a "modular" fashion the whole 'Level 1 ECHO Training' pathway, developing subsequently:

Basic/Focused Echocardiography (entry-level, M-Mode, B-Mode, TTE);
Advanced/Comprehensive Echocardiography (+ Doppler, TEE).

b) Level 1 'ULTRASOUND LIFE SUPPORT'

A fully modular basic and advanced approach is available also for the "UltraSound Life Support" skill sets:

Trauma (US TLS), CPR (US CLS), Prehospital (US PHLS), Disaster Triage (US TRIAGE);
Central vascular access (US CVA), Airway management (US AIR), Nerve blockage (US BLOCK);
O&G (US OBGYN), Neonatal/Pediatrics (US PLS);
Nursing care (US NURSE);
General Practice (US GP), Primary Health Care +/- in scarce-resource/rural scenarios (US PHC, PRIMUS).

A modular approach focused in a batch of key-applications is also available for nurses, midwives and paramedics (US NURSING, etc.)

c) Level 2 TRAINING

After completing Level 1 training steps (USCLS BL1 and AL1, or other modules), you and/or your department could develop further skills in specific Level 2 applications, reaching the technical competency of the imaging specialist:

Advanced, Comprehensive, Level 2 Modules: ECHO, ABDOMINAL, MMSK, RENAL, VASCULAR, OBGYN, etc.

Pre-requisites for these modules can vary; they usually follow the standard certification cryteria above mentioned, through basic/advanced and provider/trainer modules; incoming events available in our calendar webpage.

Note: People particularly skilled and committed could finally apply for Level 3 certification, usually limited to outstanding experts, investigators, directors ... regional or International champions in the field.
